About Monos

Monos Luggage

Monos is a young brand with a big dream: to make travel better for us and the planet. And they’re not messing around. Based in Canada, the direct-to-consumer luggage company is dedicated to crafting premium suitcases and travel essentials that are built to last, designed to impress, and engineered for effortless journeys. They set themselves apart through ethical manufacturing practices and the use of recycled materials, as well as an impeccable sense of style and attention to detail evident in every sleek, durable construction and intuitive feature.

Aesthetics

Well-designed carry-on suitcase

As a frequent traveler, I care about how long my luggage will last and how well it protects my gear, but I also care a lot about what it looks like.

The Monos Hybrid Carry-On is stunning, to begin with. The minimal, modern design with clean lines and slightly rounded corners exudes timelessness and refinement, while the brushed metal finish adds a touch of quiet luxury.

Whereas most metallic-finished suitcases on the market tend to be loud and flashy, this one feels calm and classy. The Champagne model, in particular, has a subtle futuristic vibe that reminds me of Dune, and I love that Monos opted for color-coordinated components to create a cohesive and visually appealing aesthetic. From the handles to the wheels to the discreet branding, everything flows together in perfect harmony.

There are three refined color options available for the Hybrid Carry-On: Champagne, Silver, and Obsidian, all of which look and feel high-class.

Materials

Aluminum and polycarbonate hybrid shell

Monos’ commitment to quality is no joke. The Hybrid Carry-On is made with premium, sustainable materials, reflecting the brand’s dedication to a greener future. It combines the brand’s already durable polycarbonate shell with a rugged aluminum frame and corner guards into an incredibly lightweight yet impossibly strong suitcase.

The aerospace-grade polycarbonate is water-resistant and partially recycled, and the metallic finish looks seriously stylish while hiding dust, dirt, fingerprints, and scratches much better than I expected. The suitcase is accented with vegan leather details, and the trolley handle, zipperless frame, and corner guards are all made of high-grade aluminum, adding both style and durability to the design.

For the interior lining, Monos uses an anti-microbial fabric designed to keep contents hygienically fresh. Made from 100% recycled polyester, this is delightfully soft to the touch and feels noticeably superior to other bags we tested, even those costing more.

Design and Functionality

Form and function go hand in hand in this case. This Monos zipperless suitcase is thoughtfully designed for seamless travel, with premium components, eco-friendly materials, and an unwavering attention to detail.

I’ve used the Hybrid Carry-On over twenty times now, and I have been able to roll it through busy, bumpy city streets just as easily as I have on smooth terminal floors. The in-house designed 360º spinner wheels are silent, sturdy, and glide effortlessly even after years of use.

Engineered from the ground up, its aluminum telescopic handle is satisfyingly sturdy, feels confident in your grip, and has 4 height settings to ensure a comfortable fit for users of all sizes. Maybe the most game-changing of all, the unique bottom release button makes it more intuitive to use than that on any other model around.

Instead of zippers, this piece has two trunk-style latches with TSA-approved combination locks for an extra level of security (and style). These open with the push of a button, and although are made of plastic, I have never had any problems whatsoever.

The top and side handles made the bag easy to lift into overhead bins and carry up stairs in Porto, and they feel stronger and more luxurious than others on similarly priced luggage. I also like how they seamlessly meld into the clean overall aesthetic.

Despite its aluminum frame, the Monos Hybrid Carry-On is still very lightweight. The capacity is big enough for a weekend’s worth of belongings, but small enough to fit in the overhead bin of almost any flight. And if you want more space, this suitcase is also available in a “Carry-On Plus” size.

Interior

Zippered compartment with shoe bag
Monos Hybrid Carry-On Interior

Stylish, intuitive, and highly functional, the Monos carry-on’s interior is my favorite of any suitcase I’ve ever tested. One side is a zippered compartment for versatile storage, while the other one is an open compartment held in by a removable compression pad and a pair of wide and sturdy compression straps for extra security.

The internal zippers work smoothly and there’s an ideal amount of zip mesh pockets to keep smaller items visible and organized. I use them for magazines, accessories, chargers, and other flat things I need to access easily. Even my laptop fits in one, safely nestled in its protective case between my clothes.

The interior lining deserves particular praise: not only is it crafted entirely from recycled materials, but it boasts antimicrobial properties and feels downright luxurious.

Like all Monos suitcases, the Hybrid Carry-On includes a laundry bag and two shoe bags made from the same soft, anti-microbial fabric to keep your dirty clothes and footwear separate. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference.

Strength and Durability

Monos Hybrid Carry-On

I know luggage is meant to be used, but when I first got my hands on the Hybrid Carry-On, I couldn’t help not to be precious with it or wince every time an overzealous taxi driver threw it in the trunk of the car. But as I was to find out later, this suitcase was built to last.

Made from premium water-resistant German Makrolon polycarbonate, the carry-on has held up beautifully through many flights, car trips, as well as train and bus rides. The zipperless aluminum frame and protective corner guards add strength and durability to an already super-tough construction, making it virtually indestructible. Also, after years of use, its sleek brushed exterior turned out to be much more resistant to dents and scratches than I thought it would be.

Fortunately, I have not been put in the situation of having to check the Hybrid Carry-On. However, I checked his big brother, the Hybrid Trunk, twice on my last trip to London, and every time, it miraculously emerged from the baggage claim unscathed, with no visible damage.

More than that, Monos puts each of its cases through a series of forty tests meant to assess their durability and functionality, so you can rest assured it will survive any adventure you throw its way. The company even goes the extra mile with an excellent limited lifetime warranty and a generous 100-day return window, showing they stand behind their products and want customers to be completely satisfied with their purchase.

How We Tested the Monos Hybrid Carry-On

Testing the Monos Hybrid Carry-On

We tested the suitcase for three years before writing this Monos Hybrid Carry-On review, traveling with it ourselves across Europe and beyond.

From navigating bustling airports to braving the unforgiving cobblestone alleys of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, we pushed the bag to its limits. It’s been tossed into taxis and overhead compartments, caught up in a downpour in London, wheeled across terrains of all types, and even used as an impromptu seat during long waits at the airport.

Sure, it has a few minor scratches here and there, but it’s gloriously dent-free, still looking amazing, and functioning perfectly.

Value

Aluminum-frame suitcase

At this price point, you won’t find a better aluminum-frame suitcase than the Monos Hybrid Carry-On. Cleverly combining the benefits of polycarbonate and aluminum luggage, the bag is a bit more expensive than your average polycarbonate carry-on, but still more affordable than most all-aluminum pieces.

For a little over $300, you get a refined, super-durable piece of luggage that will see you through countless adventures. The quality of the materials, thoughtful design, and premium touches make it worth every penny. Plus, the lifetime warranty, seamless 100-day returns, and bonus accessories that Monos throws in sweeten the deal, making it a smart investment for any traveler.

Monos Hybrid Carry-On vs. Monos Carry-On Pro

Monos Carry-On Pro

The regular Monos Carry-On is a fantastic piece of luggage. Think of it as the foundational design that all other Monos carry-ons are built upon. They share the same whisper-quiet 360° wheels, custom-designed aluminum handles, thoughtfully engineered interior, and lightweight, unbreakable polycarbonate case.

However, there are some differences. Roughly speaking, the Carry-On Pro features a built-in front compartment, the Carry-On Plus is larger, and the Hybrid Carry-On sports a luxe metallic finish and an ultra-durable aluminum frame for extra protection.

Since I own and use both the Hybrid Carry-On and the Carry-On Pro frequently, I will try to make a comparison between those. Both suitcases are excellent, but they cater to different needs.

I particularly love the built-in front pocket on the Pro, and I think it’s a real game changer for travelers who often bring a laptop or need quick access to documents or other essentials without carrying an extra bag.

On the other hand, the Hybrid Carry-On boasts superior protection with its zipperless aluminum frame and reinforced corners. It also feels sleeker and more sophisticated than the Carry-On Pro, thanks to its elegant metallic finish that extends across all components and design details, providing a clean, streamlined look.

Some online reviews state that the brushed finish shows scratches more easily, and honestly, I expected the same. However, I haven’t noticed any difference; from my experience, both finishes behave similarly.

Their interior layouts are identical, and both carry-ons have the same packing capacity. However, the aluminum details make the Hybrid one lb heavier.

Ultimately, choosing between the Monos Hybrid Carry-On and the Carry-On Pro depends on your travel style. The former caters to frequent flyers or minimalists who value organization, whereas the latter is ideal for style-conscious adventurers seeking ultimate protection (turns out, I’m both).

Need More Space? The Monos Hybrid Trunk Is a Big, Functional Piece of Art.

Monos Hybrid Luggage Review

The Monos Hybrid Trunk is a larger, unique version of the Hybrid Carry-On and has everything I love about its little sibling, and then some. Not only is the distinct, vintage-inspired silhouette visually striking, but its tall shape with deep compartments makes it easy for me to pack bulky gear and as many souvenirs as my heart desires.

This is my favorite checked suitcase for winter travel, those trips home that require filling it with precious bottles of Ribera and local olive oil, and obviously, every time I feel like making a big style statement.

As far as functionality goes, the Hybrid Trunk features the same top-of-the-line components and materials and rolls through city streets and busy airports just as easily as the Hybrid Carry-On.

If you like it, go for a set. Pair the trunk with a matching carry-on to unlock double the style and functionality. Plus, score a sweet $20 discount in the process!
